La Calaca Press Iternational Print Exchange is a traveling exhibition and print exchange organized by Carlos Barberena - a nicaraguan printmaker based in Chicago - The main idea of this Project is promote printmaking and create connections with printmakers around the World.

In this project are participating 151 printmakers with 150 works from Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Serbia, South Africa, Spain and the United States.

...“The strength of this show lies not only in the quality of its prints, but also in the diversity of printmaking techniques. Fine woodcuts, lithographs, etchings, mezzotints, screenprints, and even a solar plate print are notable."

A Suite of Social Justice Themed Prints

Un-Natural Disasters - A Suite of Social Justice Themed Prints will be opening on Friday October 21 atExpressions Graphics gallery in Oak Park. The printmakers working at Expressions Graphics have a solid tradition of bringing attention to important issues of the day. Un-Natural Disasters promises to be one of their best exhibitions in some time. Oak Park printmaker Jill Kramer has organized the show, and I caught up with her to ask her about what made this exhibit special and timely.

Jill has been an artist for many years and Un-Natural Disasters came about from an increased desire to use the arts as a vehicle to speak to social justice issues. An active member of Expressions Graphics, Kramer approached the studio with her ideas about this type of exhibition. They teamed up and invited artists to participate in this themed show.

Apparently the concept struck a nerve: the show will feature prints from 20 artists from the Chicago area as well from other states, Mexico and Canada. As the prints arrived Kramer was surprised to learn that many of the artists already had been working on social justice issues that resonated to them. And the quality of the prints is outstanding.

I asked Jill why she thought this will be an important show. So many of these concerns that swirl around society are topics of everyday conversation: unemployment, education, the environment, hunger. The themes of this show are accessible and immediate to us in a way that fine art in a museum may not be. Kramer's print explores the issues of hunger and waste - a subject that to many may seem like a distant worry, but is in fact nearer to us than we care to imagine.

Kramer was proud to announce that one portfolio of the exhibition will be shown in Taxco, Mexico. And discussions are in the works with other venues in Texas, Canada, Mexico, and Nicaragua.

Robert is a visual artist based in his hometown Granada, Nicaragua. He Attended the school of fine Arts in Granada and the National school of Arts, Managua, Nicaragua.

He has had solo exhibitions in Costa Rica, Germany and Nicaragua. His work has been exhibiting in group exhibitions in Galleries, Art Biennials, Museums and Art Festivals in various places including Bulgaria, Canada, Costa Rica, Egypt, France, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras, Japan, Nicaragua, Mexico, USA and Venezuela.

He has received various awards, most notably the 1st place in the National Printmaking Contest at La Casa de los Tres Mundos in Granada, Nicaragua in 1997 and the 1st place in the National Festival of the Arts in San José, Costa Rica in 1992.

He is a visual artist from Granada, Nicaragua based in Maryland. He Attended the school of fine Arts, Granada, Nicaragua, the National school of Arts, Managua, Nicaragua. "César Barberena's subjects embody collective archetypes, symbols of the soul perpetually present, even – and particularly – in the murky confines of our most stultified urges and desires. His language is cryptic, inasmuch as it speaks to us in profound metaphors, incongruent and disturbing to the undiscerning ear. Thresholds to Conservation is the first Rio Grande Valley Collaborative printmaking portfolio produced in response to a call for artist, printmakers, and educators by Reynaldo Santiago, curator at the Art House Gallery in McAllen, Texas. Invited to participate in the portfolio are a unique group of international and local artists who have interpreted images, each with a specific message, based on the title via a variety of printmaking techniques. All prints are original, hand pulled, and signed by the artist.

Participating artists include:

“Master-Prints”
In this series I employ the process of appropriating and varying “Master Pieces of Art,” using at times both their titles and compositional strategies but inserting contemporary imagery to create new works.

These pieces reflect contemporary issues such as environmental pollution, exploitation of natural resources, human rights issues, violence, labor rights, wars, and the use and abuse of power.

My selection of master pieces was not entirely random: with most, I chose pieces which reflected contemporary issues during the period in which they were produced. I researched the ideas behind each artist’s piece, the ways in which each artist dealt with the contradictions and hypocrisy of these issues.

Then in some, I inserted contemporary issues into them that fit with the complex imagery of each. In others, where the message of the work was particularly clear and widely understood, I introduced new, contradictory ideas.

Carlos Barberena is a Nicaraguan visual artist based in Oak Park IL. He has had solo shows in Costa Rica, Mexico, Nicaragua and The United States of America, and his work has been shown in important Art Fairs, Art Biennials, Museums and Galleries in many places including Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Germany, Italy, Spain, USA, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

He has created many installations in public spaces in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Venezuela and his work was selected to represent Nicaragua in the XIII Art Salon: Identity Imprint: A Glance at Ibero-American Printmaking at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, DC. And in the III World Body Art Conference in Venezuela.

His artistic work has been published in almanacs and Christmas cards benefiting Costa Rican children. He has also participated in art auctions benefiting Nicaraguan children and Nicaraguan Printmaking in Bonn, Germany, He also illustrated a book for children published in Vienna, Austria.

He has received various awards, most notably the award- poster for the Ecology and Human Rights in Banana Plantations in Costa Rica, given by GEBANA in Berlin, Germany.

His work is included in private and public collections, among them The International Exlibriscentrum, Stedelijke Museum in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, the Lia Bermudez Museum in Venezuela, The Printmaking Workshop (Taller de Formación y Producción Gráfica), in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, Mexico, the National Gallery (Galeria Nacional) of Costa Rica, the Cultural Museum of the Caribbean (Museo Cultural del Caribe) in Venezuela, the Praxis Gallery in Nicaragua.

"Noösphere" Print Works by Eveline Kolijn

Eveline Kolijn is a Calgary-based printmedia and multidisciplinary artist. An international childhood and Master's degree in Cultural Anthropology from the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden, The Netherlands, nurtured her interest in the diversity of human culture and nature.
She graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design with a BFA in print media in 2008 and is the recipient of the Governor General’s Academic medal.
She has collaborated with Canadian national award-winning poet Christian Bök to produce a folio of prints based on his ideas. She has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is the Chair of Alberta Printmakers Society. She is currently an Extended Studies instructor at the Alberta College of Art + Design and a teacher for the Royal Conservatory’s Learning Through The Arts program.

Chine-colle Workshop

Chine-colle is a method of bonding lightweight, natural paper on a print, through the use of a printing press. It is a way to add color and texture without having to prepare an additional plate to print.

- I shall demonstrate two different glue methods of Chine-Colle: One using traditional Japanese ricepaste and the other using dry, Polifix wall-paperglue-powder.

- I shall discuss the different uses of the Chine-colle technique, for different effects and demonstrate printing with these techniques (cut-out sections, whole paper and printed with another image).

- The participants should bring etched plates with which they want to experiment, lightweight papers in different tints and textures, and normal printing paper. They can also bring lightweight paper with printed texture on it.

He has exhibited widely in the Midwest, Mexico and Canada. Rene also teaches in the Chicago public school system. He's a wonderful teacher and is doing a benefit workshop to help our not-for-proffit printmaking gallery and studio.

Printing with Styrofoam Plates: A Family Activity
Create prints using new and recycled Styrofoam (plates, containers). There is no carving and no sharp tools involved. It is easy for adults and children of any age. Create your image on the Styrofoam using a regular pencil or ball-point pen. Print by hand on regular typing paper using water based markers. Very easy and lots of fun for the whole family.

I wanted to organize an international collaboration on the theme of death for a while. Since this is such a universal topic, not only would everyone have something to say about it but, the way in which each artist would tell it, and the meaning and symbols each artist could use would be vastly different and rich. This was the year when I finally asked a group of friends if they would be interested. The response was a robust yes! What is the deadline and what are the parameters? Soon we were all at work drawing and sketching ideas for our prints.

This portfolio includes 20 artists from United States, Mexico, France, Canada and Spain. The prints included were done by artists with distinct experiences and cultural traditions. There is great diversity of life experiences and perspectives towards death which are reflected in this suite of prints. For example, there are serigraphs done by artists from Mexico living in Chicago and in Seville, Spain; a linocut done by a Japanese artist living in Toronto, Canada; linocut print by an English artist living in Paris; and other prints done by artists living in their respective or adopted countries.

This unique collaboration offers a window of opportunity to look into the diverse perceptions of death artists bring to this graphic project. Through these prints some artists interpret death in a spiritual and a way of recalling the deceased relatives with the recreation of a traditional altar/ofrenda. In other cases artists make use of playful skeletons, in the Jose Guadalupe Posada style, to pock fun at life, sexual encounters, to criticize political leaders and drunkenness. Yet others make use of more ritual-like and profound cultural symbols to allude to the essence; the natural cycle of life and death.

Airline Secutriy (Ziplock Bag) Art Show

Expressions Graphics is hosting a show zip lock bag art show. If you have traveled by airplane lately you probably know about the rules regarding taking liquids and gels on an airplane. These rules are the motivation behind this show. Create a unique piece of art, put it into a zip lock bag. Mail it to Expressions Graphics. Do not limit yourself to security, or airlines themes.

Rules:

In accordance with Transportation Safety Administration rules, all artwork must fit into one zip lock bag, no larger than 1 quart. One bag per artist.

Any liquids must be in a container no larger than 3 oz and fit into the quart sized clear zip lock bag. Larger bags will not be accepted, sandwich type bags are also prohibited.

You must comply with TSA rules regarding what can and cannot be put into checked bags, and what can and cannot be put into the carry on zip lock bag. You must also comply with postal rules regarding what can and cannot be shipped.

For a fee, we will put your art on the web (This blog here). Send $5.00 and your name along with your art, we will photograph the art and put it on our blog. There will be no other formal documentation.

If you want your art returned, you must come to Expressions Graphics on the day the show will be taken down to retrieve your art yourself. Date TBD, watch the blog for more info. Or you must send $10 plus a self addressedstamped envelop. No exceptions. (If you really want it returned it would be best to pick it up yourself). Any artwork not picked up, will be disposed of properly. There will be more information on our website for day of take down. As of this writing we have not determined that day.

All art must be received by July 28, 2009. Any art received after that time, may or may not be displayed at the discretion of the curator.

Expressions Graphics reserves the right to exclude any artwork deemed inappropriate. On the other hand we have yet to reject much in the way of art, so have at it.

Labeling and hanging:

Put your name and the name of your piece in, or on the plastic bag. All bags will be hung using clips or tacks. The show will be hung on August 2nd, 2009.

Using a 2x3 inch rubber block you will transferred a drawing and learn to use carving tools to make a relief print. Put them on a card to send to friends and family. Bring a drawing. Students will also make cards to exchange with other students in the class.

Making Jewelry with Metal Clay

Metal Clay is a very flexible material similar to clay that when finished is fired in a kiln. The students will make a pendant and a pair of earrings and use cubic zirconium stones. After it is fired, you can wear your fine silver earrings home. Additional Metal Clay may be purchased in class. Max students 6.

The Nicaraguan Artist Carlos Barberena will be opening his next Solo Print Show "Años de Miedo" (Time of Fear) on February 20, at Expressions Graphics Gallery in Oak Park IL, USA.

This Print Portfolio is a homage to the victims of war, is based on his memories and the collective historical memory of his country (Nicaragua) in the decades of the 70's and 80's, but this does not mean that it is limited geographically, because it is the reality in many countries at present.

This Portfolio is presented as a manner of reflection about war and its effects.
Años de Miedo is his first Print Portfolio Project and consists of 22 linocut prints printed on Rives paper of 180grms. In an edition of 25 prints, made and printed by Carlos Barberena.

Beginning Screen printing

Jan. 27 - Feb. 18, Tuesday, 7-9:30PM, (Plus we will choose one make up/open studio time TBA in Class)

In this class we will be using drawing method to make our stencil. Then we will explore using a photographic technique to transfer your image to your screen. Simple printing with water based inks will finish the class. A great introduction to basic screen printing! All material included except paper.

Guest Artist Workshop: Fantasy Garden Painting

Fee: $50 all supplies included.

Each year artists from Expressions Graphics reach into the local community to share the art and craft of printmaking with non-traditional groups who may not have access or funding for these types of programs. This show with the United Cerebral Palsy group was done totally by the volunteers at Expressions Graphics.

By purchasing these prints you will contribute directly towards the cost of materials and supplies as well as the artist’s time to work with various groups in the Oak Park area.

The cost of an individual print is $30. A complete portfolio of 8 prints is available for $200. The prints are composed of many different processes, including linocut, woodblock, screen-printing, etching and more. Artists from the United States, Mexico and Canada have formed a grassroots collaboration to create artwork to spread awareness of the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP), what the Bush administration calls "NAFTA-PLUS", an umbrella for some 300 joint corporate and government initiatives affecting all three countries. This artwork is included in: Pipelines and Borderlines a tri-national political print portfolio that will be on exhibit at the Oak Park Public Library from October 2 through October 30, with a reception on Sunday, October 12th from 2 to 5:30 p.m. A talk by one of the artists, René Arceo, will be presented that day at 4 p.m.

The curator of this project is printmaker, Beverly Keys, a member of Expressions Graphics in Oak Park and an artist with a passion for politics. One afternoon, while listening to her favorite public radio show, her interest was piqued. She learned that the SPP was formed in 2005 when the presidents of the United States and Mexico and the prime minister of Canada met at the behest of 30 corporations (10 from each country). They formed a covert partnership and set an agenda free of any public input.

“They claim this agenda would expand economic opportunities for the people of North America, but these initiatives adversely affect the public health, labor relations, environment and other dimensions of the lives of everyone living on this continent! ” exclaims Keys. “And democracy is at stake here!”

Motivated by passion, Keys recruited 19 artists from the three countries, many who are also members of Expressions Graphics. Keys asked each to create a print edition focusing on two of the initiatives that she found of particular threat to global health and human rights. One is the Oil Sands Project, the largest surface mining operation in the world. A pipeline, starting in Alberta, Canada, will run mostly to US refineries, including the local British Petroleum (BP) refinery in Whiting Indiana. This could threaten the health of millions of people that depend on Lake Michigan for drinking water. The amount of ammonia released into the lake will increase three fold, which would mean dumping an average of 3822 lbs of ammonia per day.

The second initiative is an Automated Targeting System that integrates the United States “no-fly” list into a single North American database. This system assigns every person flying in and out of the United States a risk assessment score. The system is based on government databases that are full of errors. The list includes preschoolers and one U.S. Senator. Furthermore, no one has access to find out what their score is or any right to challenge it.

The result of the artists’ efforts is 35 portfolios consisting of 21 political prints (two of the artists created two prints) that will travel to different venues throughout North America. The first exhibitions will be presented at the Oak Park Public Library in Illinois and in Acapulco Mexico. The following exhibition is scheduled in early 2009 at Alberta Printmakers in Calgary.

One of the participating U.S. artists, René Arceo, will give a talk at the exhibit’s opening reception about the history of printmaking and politics in Mexico. Arceo is an internationally exhibited artist with solo shows in France, Mexico, Poland and the U.S. to his credit. He also has extensive curatorial experience and advised Keys on this project.
